Is it really free?

There is no platform fee on the Free plan (UK). The platform is funded by optional tips at checkout, and 10% of tips come back to your cause. Stripe's card fees apply and are passed through without markup.

Do bidders need to download anything?

No. The site works in any phone, tablet or computer browser. Bidders register with a name and mobile number or email.

Do I need a licence?

No. An online auction sits outside the Gambling Act 2005. Raffles are different and may need registering with your council.

How do winners pay and how do we get the funds?

Winners pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay on the site. Payments go through your own Stripe UK account and settle to your bank on Stripe's schedule. GalaBid holds nothing.

Can I post lots to winners?

Can I claim Gift Aid on bids?

Generally no. HMRC treats a bid as payment for the lot. A separate donation at checkout can qualify. See HMRC's guidance.

How is the auction platform free
in the UK?

On the Free plan there is no platform fee. When winners pay for their lots they are prompted to tip GalaBid. They can can change the tip to any amount including zero, and 10% of tips are shared back to your cause. If your winners do not tip, your campaign is not charged. If you would rather supporters never see a tip prompt, the Pro plan charges 4.9%, and a flat fee option is available for larger campaigns. Stripe's UK card fees apply on every plan and are passed through without markup.
